At Trauma Healing NW, we know that understanding your brain is an important step forward in the healing process. Whether you’re navigating trauma, chronic stress, or emotional overwhelm, your brainwaves—the electrical patterns of your brain—play a large role in how you feel, think, and recover.

Let’s explore the five main brainwaves and how they relate to trauma recovery, emotional regulation, and personal growth.

The Five Main Brainwaves

Delta (0.5–4 Hz)

Delta waves are associated with deep sleep and body-based restoration. For many trauma survivors, restorative sleep is elusive—delta activity may be underactive or disrupted by a hypervigilant nervous system.

We use neurofeedback and EMDR to support healthy delta activity, helping your body and mind finally access the deep rest it needs to heal and grow.

Theta (4–8 Hz)

Theta waves help unlock emotional memory, creativity, and intuitive processing. In trauma recovery, theta can bring up important emotional material—but if unregulated, it may also feel disorienting or trigger flashbacks.

That’s why we offer neurofeedback with EMDR and exposure therapy, creating a safe environment for insight without overwhelm.

Alpha (8–12 Hz)

Alpha is the bridge between rest and alertness. Many people with unresolved trauma experience dysregulated alpha—either too little (leaving them anxious and restless) or too much (feeling detached or dissociative).

With gentle and personalized care, we can help restore this balance so you can experience calm moods and emotional safety.

Beta (12–30 Hz)

Beta supports logic, language, and active focus, but high beta is often overactive in trauma survivors, keeping the brain stuck in alert mode. This can show up as intrusive thoughts, rumination, or hypervigilance.

Neurofeedback works to gently quiet excess beta activity, helping your mind shift out of survival mode and into healing mode.

Gamma (30–100 Hz)

Gamma is tied to conscious insight, memory integration, and higher awareness. Supporting healthy gamma activity can help trauma survivors begin to reconnect fragmented experiences, find meaning, and feel whole again.

Why Brainwaves Matters in Trauma Work

Your brain learns patterns for survival that are often necessary—but sometimes those patterns keep you stuck throughout your life. By retraining your brainwaves, we can help you form new, supportive patterns that promote safety, connection, and clarity.
